Fire Safety Act

The object of this Act is the protection of persons and property against fires of any nature, excepted for forest resources protected under the Forest Act. The Act determines the parameters of fire safety in its main aspects, namely fire prevention, emergency response procedures, emergency responses operations, the training of fire safety services personnel, and the determination of the point of origin, probable causes and circumstances of fires. The Act sets out the general obligations incumbent on every person regarding fire prevention and the reporting of fire hazards. Moreover, the Act proposes the establishment of a fire safety cover plan for determining protection objectives and the actions necessary to achive them. The powers and duties of municipal fire safety services and their personnel are determined in the Act. The Act also establishes the École nationale des pompiers du Québec and defines its mission, organization and powers. Finally, the duties of the fire investigation commissioner and the roles of firefighter and police officers in the determination of the point of origin, probable causes and circumstances of fires are specified in the Act.
