The purpose of this Act is to establish the general principles that are to guide the actions of correctional services of the Ministère de la Sécurité publique, the Commission québécoise des libérations conditionnelles and their community-based partners as well as all other stakeholders of the correctional system as they exercise their respective functions. Underlying these general principles is the objective of protecting society, ensuring compliance with the decisions of the courts and reintegrating offenders into the community.
In addition, the bill defines the role of correctional services officers, parole officers and correctional counsellors, granting them the status of peace officers in the exercise of their functions.
Note: This Act has replaced the Act respecting correctional services and the Act to promote the parole of inmates, since 5 February 2007.
